چکیده

Iron overload occurs in many hematologic disorders and causes significant morbidity. The advantages of MRI in quantifying liver iron concentration continue to mount, and the association between iron overload and increased mortality after allogeneic stem cell transplant needs further attention.

Commentary on Wermke et al., MRI-based liver iron content predicts for non-relapse mortality in MDS and AML patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation Assessing iron overload: are we there yet?

In this issue of Clinical Cancer Research, Wermke et al 1 publish results of an observational study of magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) assessment of liver iron content (LIC) in 88 patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for either myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) (n=24) or acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) (n=64). Systemic iron overload (SIO) in these conditions is a cons...

EFFECT OF IRON OVERLOAD ON 7, 12-DIMETHYLBENZ (A) ANTHRACENE-INDUCED SKIN TUMORIGENESIS

Iron overload is known to occur in the West European and American population due to the consumption of iron-rich diets. On the other hand, genetic disorders leading to iron overload are also known. Iron overload leads to increased peroxidation and disruptive disintegration of lipid-rich membranes, and predisposes humans for an enhanced risk of cancer induction. In experimental animals iron ...

A screening test for assessing iron status.

Intervention strategies to combat iron deficiency anemia in developing countries may hasten the development of iron overload in patients with an inherited defect in hemoglobin synthesis. This risk could be diminished if there was a rapid and simple method available for detecting iron overload in population screening programs. We have developed such a method, which is in effect a semiquantitativ...

Correlation between QRS Complex Changes and Cardiac Iron Overload in Beta Thalassemia Major Patients Using T2*MRI

Background and purpose: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a costly method to assess cardiac iron overload. The presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) indicates changes due to iron overload in cardiac tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between fQRS and cardiac iron overload using cardiac MRI in patients with β-thalassemia major (β-TM). Materials and methods: This...

Assessment of Organ Specific Iron Overload in Transfusion-dependent Thalassemia by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Techniques

The consequence of repeated blood transfusions in thalassemia is iron overload in different organs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a reliable, non-invasive and accurate method for iron detection in various tissues, hence the introduction of MRI has revolutionized the management of these patients and improved the life expectancy of them. Cardiac MRI T2* has a profound effect not only on est...
